Former President Donald Trump has reportedly been chastised by pro-life activists for claiming that anti-abortion activists who backed “no exceptions” abortion restrictions damaged Republicans in the midterm elections.
The former president stated on social media on Sunday that the Republican Party’s poor election result “wasn’t [his] fault.”
“It wasn’t my fault that the Republicans didn’t live up to expectations in the MidTerms. I was 233-20! It was the “abortion issue,” poorly handled by many Republicans, especially those that firmly insisted on No Exceptions, even in the case of Rape, Incest, or Life of the Mother, that lost large numbers of Voters. Also, the people that pushed so hard, for decades, against abortion, got their wish from the U.S. Supreme Court, & just plain disappeared, not to be seen again. Plus, Mitch stupid $’s!” Trump wrote on a statement released on his Truth Social app.
The former president has faced harsh criticism inside the Republican Party after the party’s performance in the 2022 midterm elections.
His detractors have focused on Republican candidates Trump backed in competitive senate contests and other difficult races who lost in the general election.
Republicans were hoping for a red wave election that would give them control of the Senate and a large majority in the United States House.
Instead, Republicans won the smallest House majority in US history, while Democrats gained an extra Senate seat.

As someone that opposes abortion in all cases, I have to concede he has a point. At this point in time, pushing to ban abortion with no exceptions isn’t politically viable. Sometimes it is necessary to accept moving in the right direction without insisting on complete victory.
