Pakistan launched a succession of lethal military assaults against alleged hideouts of separatist militants within Iran, in the most recent incident that occurred across their shared border and has escalated tensions between the two neighboring countries.
In an era of escalating conflict in the Middle East and the broader region, both Pakistan and Iran have, with the recent attacks, undertaken the unprecedented course of action of engaging militants on one another’s territory this week.
Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) and Balochistan Liberation Front (BLF), two militant organizations contending for greater regional autonomy, were said to have utilized the hideouts targeted by the operation.
The assaults prompted Tehran to demand “immediate explanation” from Pakistan, according to an official cited by the Iranian state-aligned Tasnim news agency.
A visit to the World Economic Forum in Davos was canceled in the interim leadership of Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar, who is in a caretaker capacity until elections are held.
Additionally, Jalil Abbas Jilani, the caretaker foreign minister, is returning home after visiting Uganda.
According to the deputy governor of Sistan and Baluchstan, Alireza Marhamati, ten individuals were slain in the strikes, as reported by the Tasnim news agency.
The most recent incident signifies a significant escalation between the two neighboring powers and coincides with a rise in regional hostilities in the Middle East caused by Israel’s ongoing war in Gaza.
Pakistan and Iran have long fought militants in the troubled Baloch region along their 900-kilometer (560-mile) border.
