Federal authorities on Tuesday released new images and security camera footage showing a masked “potential subject” in the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of Today show co-host Savannah Guthrie, who has been missing for more than a week.

The images, which show a masked man standing at Nancy Guthrie’s front door wearing black gloves and dark clothing, were first shared publicly by FBI Director Kash Patel on the social media platform X. Patel said the photos and video were recovered from a security camera that had previously been inaccessible to investigators.

According to Patel, the FBI worked closely with the Pima County Sheriff’s Department and private sector partners to retrieve video data that may have been lost, corrupted, or otherwise unavailable. He said the footage was recovered using residual data from the backend of the home’s security system.

“Working with our partners — as of this morning, law enforcement has uncovered these previously inaccessible new images showing an armed individual appearing to have tampered with the camera at Nancy Guthrie’s front door the morning of her disappearance,” Patel wrote.

CNN aired the still images around 12:50 p.m. Eastern on Tuesday. Roughly 20 minutes later, the network broadcast the actual video footage, with anchor Jake Tapper commenting that the individual appeared unfamiliar with the security system on the front porch.

The newly released images mark the first significant piece of physical evidence made public in the case. Until now, authorities had been unable to identify any suspects or persons of interest in what law enforcement believes to be a kidnapping. The case has drawn intense national attention and prompted President Donald Trump to offer substantial federal assistance, describing the situation as “very unusual.”

The release of the images came one day after Savannah Guthrie made an emotional public appeal for help in finding her mother. In a video posted on Instagram, she urged anyone with even the smallest piece of information to contact authorities.

“If you see anything, if you hear anything, if there’s anything at all that seems strange to you, that you report to law enforcement,” she said. “We are at an hour of desperation and we need your help.”

Guthrie described the ordeal as a “nightmare” for her family. The plea came shortly before a deadline set by suspected kidnappers demanding a $6 million ransom payment, to be paid in bitcoin. The deadline passed Monday evening, and the payment was not made.

Two nights earlier, Guthrie released another short video alongside her brother Camron Guthrie and sister Annie Guthrie, stating the family was willing to pay to bring their mother home safely.

The morning after the ransom deadline, FBI agents searched the septic tank at Nancy Guthrie’s residence. Later that day, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department issued a grim update, saying no suspects, persons of interest, or vehicles had been identified in the investigation.

Nancy Guthrie was last seen on January 31. She had been dropped off at her Tucson, Arizona, home around 9:45 p.m. local time by her son-in-law, Tommaso Cioni, following a family dinner. She was reported missing the next day, February 1.

As the search enters a critical phase, authorities are urging the public to carefully review the newly released images and video, hoping someone may recognize the masked individual or provide the tip needed to break the case open.
