President Donald Trump reportedly criticized Representative Thomas Massie, R-Ky., on Truth Social, labeling him a “grandstander” after Massie opposed a Republican-backed government funding bill aimed at preventing a shutdown.
Trump threatened to support a primary challenge against Massie, who has consistently voted against spending legislation favored by the party establishment.
Massie announced he would vote against the resolution designed to extend the current government funding plan through September, which is crucial to avoid a shutdown by the upcoming deadline.
Trump responded by describing Massie as “too much trouble” and not worth the effort.
In a rebuttal, Massie took to X (formerly Twitter), indicating that while Trump attacks him, he remains steadfast in his principles.
He remarked, “POTUS is spending his day attacking me and Canada,” referencing Trump’s ongoing tariff disputes with Canada.
With the Republican majority in the House being slim—218 to 215—every vote is critical. Several Republicans were still undecided on the bill as the final vote approached.
Massie has been vocal in his opposition to the current spending measures, recently stating, “Unless I get a lobotomy Monday that causes me to forget what I’ve witnessed the past 12 years, I’ll be a NO on the CR this week.”
Interestingly, House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., refrained from firmly backing Trump’s stance, calling Massie a “friend” and acknowledging his right to vote according to his beliefs, even if they disagree.
This isn’t the first time Trump has targeted Massie; he previously urged the party to expel him.
As the House prepares for a crucial vote on the funding bill, Massie’s independence and Trump’s retaliatory threats highlight ongoing tensions within the Republican Party.
