Democrats in California Vote to Keep Male Inmates in With Female Prison Population

California Democrats reportedly recently voted against a bill that aimed to keep male sex offenders out of women’s prisons.

The decision came from the Senate Public Safety Committee, which includes Senator Scott Wiener, known for his support of progressive policies.

Republican Senator Shannon Grove proposed the bill, emphasizing the need to protect women in prison from male inmates who are registered sex offenders.

During the committee hearing, Grove highlighted the concerns of incarcerated women and revealed a disturbing letter she received from a female inmate, which included a condom distributed by prison staff.

She questioned, “Why is the state of California paying for condoms in women’s prisons?” Her bill sought to enhance privacy for female inmates and prevent males, particularly those with a history of sexual offenses, from being housed in women’s facilities.

Only Senator Kelly Seyarto, the committee’s sole Republican, supported the bill. Grove criticized the Democratic supermajority for prioritizing the rights of male inmates over the safety of women.

She pointed out that many male inmates who identify as women have been transferred to female prisons since the implementation of Wiener’s SB 132, which allows inmates to be housed according to their gender identity.

Miller’s comments echoed concerns about the potential dangers of such policies, noting that 33.8% of men seeking to transfer to women’s prisons were registered sex offenders.

Advocates for Grove’s bill, including former inmates, testified about their experiences with male inmates in female prisons, stressing the need for safety and security for women.

Critics of the current law call for a reevaluation, arguing that the safety of women must be prioritized over ideological commitments to gender identity in correctional facilities.
