Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth reportedly announced on April 1, 2025, that the remains of the fourth U.S. Army soldier, who went missing following a training accident in Lithuania, have been recovered.

This tragic news comes after the remains of three other soldiers were previously found.

Hegseth shared the announcement via social media shortly after arriving at the United States Naval Academy for a visit with future Navy and Marine Corps leaders.

In his statement, Hegseth extended his deepest condolences to the families of all four fallen soldiers from the 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division.

He expressed that the Department of Defense is grieving alongside the families and highlighted the urgency, resolve, and respect with which the recovery efforts were conducted.

Hegseth acknowledged the brave service members involved in the recovery operation and the support from Lithuanian hosts.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt also addressed the situation during a press briefing, conveying condolences from President Donald Trump and the administration.

She mentioned the soldiers’ mission involved repairing and towing an immobilized tactical vehicle when the incident occurred in the early hours of March 25.

Tragically, three soldiers were confirmed deceased the day before the announcement of the fourth soldier’s recovery.

Leavitt emphasized the profound loss and stressed the selfless sacrifices made by military personnel who serve to protect the nation.

Both officials reiterated the nation’s gratitude for the soldiers’ dedication and bravery during such difficult circumstances.

As the recovery is concluded, prayers and support for the victims’ families remain a priority, reflecting on the commitment and risk undertaken by U.S. service members worldwide.
