Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif. ), former President Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, and Hunter Biden were all criticized on Monday during a segment on money in politics on “The Daily Show.”
Stewart commenced the segment by discussing the ongoing legal challenges confronting Senator Bob Menendez (D-N.J.), who is accused of obstruction and federal bribery.
Subsequently, he shifted his focus to emphasize that government figures and politicians can enrich themselves and their families in numerous lawful ways through their positions, including by investing in stocks and using their influence to support the careers and finances of their families.
He cited Biden, Pelosi, and Kushner as figures who have allegedly done so.
Stewart then proceeded to play a clip of Pelosi invoking the “free market” as an excuse to reject demands to ban members of Congress and their spouses from trading stocks.
“Here’s the thing. In a free market, everyone has access to the same information. So unless you’re gonna put all of us on the committees, I don’t get it.” the comedian stated
“You know you’re in trouble when the most honest and transparent person in a story of government corruption is the ex-crackhead,” Stewart continued
“Robert Menendez’s gold bars in exchange for favorable legislation is obviously cartoonishly corrupt, but for anyone out there who thinks the status quo of government patronage and influence is of an entirely different species than Menendez, how dumb is you?” Stewart added.
