Former President Trump stated on Friday that, if reelected in November, he would remove protections for transgender students that the Biden administration enacted last month “on day one” of his presidency.
A final set of comprehensive amendments to Title IX, the federal civil rights law prohibiting sex discrimination in government-funded schools and education programs, was introduced by the Education Department in April.
The forthcoming regulations, scheduled to be implemented on August 1, will for the first time address discrimination on the basis of gender identity and sexual orientation.
As president, Trump has additionally pledged to implement a minimum of a dozen policies that specifically address transgender rights.
“We’re gonna end it on day one. Don’t forget, that was done as an order from the president. That came down as an executive order. And we’re gonna change it — on day one it’s gonna be changed.” Trump wrote.
These policies would consist of a federal law that recognizes only two genders and a prohibition on transgender student athletes competing nationally in accordance with their gender identity.
Additionally, he has made a commitment to penalize medical professionals who provide gender-affirming treatment to minors.
While Title IX is a federal statute, the enforcement of its regulations varies between administrations; schools are obligated to comply with these regulations in order to maintain federal funding.
