In a troubling trend, crime rates in Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s New York district have now reportedly surged by 70% since she took office in 2019, prompting frustration and fear among constituents.

This increase significantly outpaces the overall 30% rise in crime reported citywide, according to data from the New York Police Department.

Residents of the Bronx and Queens, the areas represented by Ocasio-Cortez, are expressing anger and disappointment, feeling abandoned in a time of rising lawlessness.

Guadalupe Alvarez, a longtime resident of Elmhurst, described her neighborhood as increasingly dangerous, stating, “She’s not doing anything. She doesn’t live in the neighborhood; she doesn’t care.”

Alvarez, who now faces open prostitution and gang violence near her home, confronted Ocasio-Cortez at a recent town hall but felt dismissed when the congresswoman referred her to a staff member instead.

The sentiment of abandonment is echoed by others in the community. Ramses Frias, a Republican candidate for City Council, stated, “People are suffering. They’re scared to go outside.” Many residents are connecting the uptick in crime to Ocasio-Cortez’s vocal opposition to police funding, particularly during the height of the “Defund the Police” movement.

In 2020, she argued that the $1.5 billion cut to the New York Police Department was insufficient, a stance that critics now claim has contributed to the current crisis.

Despite the alarming statistics and residents’ pleas for action, Ocasio-Cortez has maintained a focus on national issues rather than the escalating violence in her own district.

Critics argue that her absence from the local dialogue on crime reflects a disconnect between her political priorities and the pressing needs of her constituents.

Betsy Brantner Smith of the National Police Association remarked, “If you don’t feel safe, you’re not free,” emphasizing the impact of crime on community well-being.

As the situation develops, the political implications for Ocasio-Cortez could be significant.

The rise in crime may challenge her progressive agenda and raise questions about her leadership during a critical time for her constituency.

With residents demanding accountability, the congresswoman faces pressure to address their concerns and engage more actively with the community she represents.

The dynamics in Ocasio-Cortez’s district illustrate a broader debate about law enforcement, public safety, and government responsibility.

As crime continues to affect daily life, the response from elected officials will likely play a pivotal role in shaping public perception and future electoral outcomes.

With the stakes high, the question remains whether Ocasio-Cortez can reconcile her national ambitions with the urgent needs of her constituents struggling with rising crime.
