On May 12, 2025, Edan Alexander, an American-Israeli soldier held captive by Hamas for over 19 months, was reportedly released in a significant development.

Alexander, believed to be the last U.S. citizen held in Gaza, was handed over to representatives of the Red Cross in Khan Younis before being transferred to Israeli special forces.

Following his release, Alexander was returned to Israeli territory, where he will undergo a medical assessment and reunite with his family.

President Donald Trump congratulated Alexander’s family in a post on Truth Social, expressing his desire to meet with the young soldier during his upcoming visit to Qatar, contingent upon Alexander’s wishes and health.

Hamas confirmed the release, stating it was part of efforts to achieve a ceasefire and allow humanitarian aid into Gaza.

Meanwhile, Israel paused military operations ahead of the release, although Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office clarified that the military actions would continue under different conditions.

In a statement, Israeli President Isaac Herzog emphasized Israel’s commitment to securing the release of all hostages.

Alexander’s family expressed immense relief, calling his return the “greatest gift” on Mother’s Day.

This release comes amid ongoing violence in Gaza, where Israeli airstrikes continue to result in significant casualties.

More than 52,000 people have reportedly died in the conflict since it escalated following Hamas’s attack on October 7, 2023, which resulted in a significant number of hostages being taken.

As negotiations for the remaining hostages continue, Trump indicated that Alexander’s release could be a step towards ending the ongoing conflict, with mediators from Qatar and Egypt also welcoming the development.
