In a tragic incident on Wednesday night, Hamas militants reportedly attacked a bus in Gaza, resulting in the deaths of at least eight workers associated with the U.S.-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF).
The attack has raised serious concerns about the safety of aid workers in the region and the ongoing threats posed by Hamas.
The bus, carrying approximately two dozen GHF employees, was en route to an aid distribution center west of Khan Yunis when the assault occurred. Reports indicate that several individuals were injured, and there are fears that additional workers may have been taken hostage during the attack.
The GHF characterized the incident as “an attack on humanity,” condemning the violence that has targeted those dedicated to providing humanitarian assistance.
In a statement, the GHF expressed outrage over the incident, emphasizing that the victims were fathers, brothers, and sons who had been risking their lives to help others.
“We condemn this heinous and deliberate attack in the strongest possible terms,” the organization stated. “The GHF holds Hamas fully responsible for taking the lives of our dedicated workers.”
The attack follows a series of threats from Hamas against aid workers and civilians receiving assistance from the GHF, which has been implementing a humanitarian initiative designed to deliver food and supplies to the Palestinian population.
Earlier in the day, GHF had announced its largest single-day food delivery total since beginning operations, distributing 2.5 million meals.
John Acree, the interim executive director of GHF, noted the importance of maintaining momentum in their aid efforts.
“Our operations are improving, and I’m encouraged by our ability to provide a significant amount of aid on a daily basis,” he said. To date, the foundation has delivered over 16 million meals to those in need.
The GHF operates under the framework of an initiative launched during the Trump administration, aimed at ensuring humanitarian assistance reaches civilians while preventing Hamas from seizing resources.
The organization collaborates with various aid groups, including those affiliated with the United Nations, to enhance its distribution efforts and safeguard supplies from misuse.
As tensions in Gaza continue to escalate, the safety of aid workers remains a pressing concern. GHF has faced criticism regarding its security measures and the involvement of American military veterans who assist in monitoring the distribution process.
The organization maintains that it is apolitical and works solely for humanitarian purposes, coordinating with Israeli officials to ensure safe delivery of aid.
This latest attack underscores the perilous environment in which humanitarian organizations operate in Gaza, as they strive to provide essential services amidst ongoing conflict.
The international community is urged to condemn these acts of violence and support efforts to protect those dedicated to helping the vulnerable populations in the region.
