In a disturbing development, law enforcement officials in Minnesota are investigating a series of politically motivated assassinations that resulted in the deaths of State Representative Melissa Hortman and the wounding of State Senator John Hoffman. The tragic events unfolded early Saturday morning, leading Governor Tim Walz to label the attack a “politically motivated” assault.
Authorities have launched an extensive manhunt for the suspect, who is believed to have been impersonating a police officer at the time of the shootings. Brooklyn Park Police Chief Mark Bruley stated during a press conference that a manifesto was discovered in the vehicle driven by the suspect, raising concerns about the motivations behind the attack.
According to Chief Bruley, the police were alerted to the situation when an “intuitive sergeant” from the Brooklyn Park Police Department decided to check on Rep. Hortman’s home.
Upon arrival, officers observed a police vehicle with emergency lights in the driveway and a person dressed as an officer at the door. When confronted, the impersonator opened fire, prompting an exchange of gunfire with the officers.
“This is someone who clearly had been impersonating a police officer, using the trust that comes with a badge and uniform to gain access to the home,” Chief Bruley explained.
The suspect managed to escape back into the residence, leading to a heightened response from law enforcement.
Hortman and her husband were tragically shot and killed outside their home, while Senator Hoffman and his wife sustained injuries during the incident.
