Russian supplies to the battle lines in southern Ukraine were limited after a Ukrainian attack reportedly destroyed the sole road bridge connecting Russia with the annexed Crimean Peninsula, striking once more a significant symbol of President Vladimir Putin’s power.
The bridge was attacked by two naval drones, according to Russia’s National Antiterrorism Committee, at about 3 a.m. local time on Monday.
Government officials quoted by Ukrainian media also claimed that naval drones were engaged.
According to Artem Degtyarenko, a spokesperson for Ukraine’s SBU intelligence service, all the specifics of how the attack was planned will be made public following Ukraine’s triumph.
Video from the 12-mile Kerch Bridge, which cost $4 billion to construct after Russia annexed Crimea in 2014, indicated that the westbound bridge of the roadway had fallen and that the adjacent eastbound span had been moved.
This indicates that it would probably take weeks, if not months, for traffic to restart on the important artery.
There was an additional rail bridge that is more crucial for delivering supplies to the soldiers. Monday saw the return of rail travel over the Kerch Strait.
Marat Khusnullin, the deputy prime minister of Russia, announced that his country will arrange alternate road links through controlled areas of southern Ukraine, where a curfew would be suspended and border controls relaxed.
Russia claimed that two people perished in the incident and charged Ukraine with terrorism.
