According to state officials, a measure establishing a basic right to abortion in Arizona’s constitution has now reportedly received enough signatures to be placed on the ballot.

Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes (D) announced late Monday that the measure has collected around 577,971 certified signatures, nearly 200,000 more than required to appear on the November ballot and the most signatures ever verified by a citizen initiative in state history.

Bruce stated that the Arizona for Abortion Access Act would be on the ballot as “Proposition 139.”

Arizona prohibits abortion beyond 15 weeks of pregnancy, with a medical exception for the mother’s life, but not for rape or incest. The amendment would protect abortion up to the stage of fetal viability.

The ballot proposal campaign faced various legal challenges, some of which remain unresolved.

The anti-abortion organization Arizona Right to Life initially moved to contest the signatures gathered.

The group withdrew a portion of its case, but an appeal regarding the 200-word summary on the petitions is still pending.

A court ruled in favor of Arizona’s abortion access, but lawmakers have filed an appeal with the state Supreme Court.

Arizona is a vital swing state, and having an abortion rights referendum on the ballot could have a dramatic effect on the result in November.
