While a recent poll shows that more than half of Florida voters support a state ballot initiative to protect abortion rights, this may not be enough to secure passage in the November election.

A poll issued Wednesday by Florida Atlantic University (FAU) and Mainstreet USA indicated that 56 percent of Sunshine State voters favor the proposed change, falling shy of Florida’s 60 percent requirement for constitutional amendments to become law.

Women were slightly more likely than men to support Amendment 4 (59 percent versus 54 percent).

According to pollsters, 62 percent of those aged 18 to 49 favor the plan.

Party voters are significantly more divided on the topic, with Democrats overwhelmingly in favor of the initiative compared to 35% of Republicans and 59% of independents.

Amendment 4 would prohibit state legislation that restrict or prohibit abortion until fetal viability.

It has withstood numerous challenges from state officials, even after the Florida Supreme Court approved it for the ballot in May.

According to Luzmarina Garcia, Ph.D., assistant professor of political science at FAU, the most recent data represent an uptick from April, when the amendment had 49 percent approval.
