According to U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), an ISIS leader who assisted members of the terror group in their escape from a detention facility in Syria has now reportedly been apprehended by the United States.
Khaled Ahmed al-Dandal was apprehended by CENTCOM forces on Sunday, in collaboration with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), according to a release.
This occurred just days after five ISIS member detainees escaped the Raqqa Detention Facility.
CENTCOM has reported that the SDF has recaptured two of the escapees, leaving three of them at large. Al-Dandal was evaluated as a “facilitator” who supported the endeavors of detained ISIS members.
The military has stated that over 9,000 ISIS detainees are being held in over 20 SDF detention facilities in Syria. ISIS is seeking to release its detained members in order to “subsequently fuel an ISIS revival.”
In Western Iraq, the U.S. military and Iraqi Security Forces targeted ISIS militants in a separate operation last week, resulting in the deaths of at least 15 of the group’s operatives.
