According to a new survey released on Friday, the majority of Americans believe that the Israel-Hamas conflict will result in a broader conflict in the region that involves other countries.
According to a recent survey conducted by The Economist and YouGov, approximately 63% of Americans believe that the Israel-Hamas war, which is approaching its one-year anniversary, is “fairly likely” to escalate into a more extensive conflict that affects other countries in the region.
Some 22% of U.S. adults were uncertain, while 15% of them stated that it is “not very likely” or “not at all likely.”
The conflict commenced on October 7, 2017, when the Palestinian militant organization Hamas launched an attack on Israel, resulting in the deaths of approximately 1,200 Israelis and the abduction of approximately 250 hostages.
The Israeli military’s bombardment of Gaza has resulted in the deaths of over 41,000 Palestinians since that time, a figure that does not distinguish between combatants and civilians.
The poll revealed that Americans have a greater degree of sympathy for the Israelis than they do for the Palestinians.
Approximately 33% of Americans sympathize with the Israelis, while 24% were uncertain. An additional 24% identified themselves as equal, while 19% of adults in the United States expressed sympathy for the Palestinians.
Democrats exhibit greater sympathy for the Palestinians when divided by party affiliation, while Republicans exhibit the greatest compassion for the Israelis.
The Palestinians are supported by approximately 33 Democrats. According to the survey, 32% of Democrats expressed sympathy for the Israelis, while 14% expressed both sentiments.
Only the Israelis were supported by the majority of Republicans, which constituted 63%.
Only 5% of Republican voters sympathized with the Palestinians, while fourteen percent expressed sympathies for both.
The respondents were selected from YouGov’s opt-in panel and the poll was conducted from September 21-24. The margin of error was approximately three percent.
