The provision of antipersonnel land mines to Ukraine has now reportedly been authorized by outgoing President Joe Biden.
This action is intended to enhance Kyiv’s defenses against the advance of Russian troops, but it has been met with criticism from arms control groups.
The action is a response to the White House’s recent authorization, which authorizes Ukraine to employ a potent missile system to conduct strikes within Russia.
This authorization is part of a series of urgent measures that the lame-duck Biden administration is taking to assist Kyiv in its deteriorating war effort.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has issued a warning that Moscow will respond to the most recent missile assaults from the Army Tactical Missile System, or ATACMS, which has a range of approximately 190 miles.
The shipment of antipersonnel land mines to Ukraine is also potentially controversial, albeit among a distinct group: An international treaty prohibiting the use of these weapons has been signed by over 160 countries, which recognizes that they can inflict lasting injury on civilians.
Biden had been hesitant to provide Ukraine with the mines due to concerns from his own administration and a diverse group of anti-mine advocates who believe that the danger to civilians is unacceptable.
However, the Biden White House has been compelled to take desperate measures in an effort to find a means to continue the war in the face of the victory of President Elect Trump and the battlefield progress made by Russia in recent months.
