The de facto prohibition on American military contractors deploying to Ukraine to assist the Ukrainian military in the maintenance and repair of US-provided weapons systems, particularly F16 fighter jets and Patriot air defense systems, has now been officially lifted by the Biden administration.
The new policy, which was authorized earlier this month prior to the election, would enable the Pentagon to award contracts to American companies for work in Ukraine for the first time since Russia’s invasion in 2022.
It is uncertain whether Donald Trump will maintain the policy upon his inauguration in January.
The transition represents yet another substantial escalation in the Biden administration’s Ukraine policy, as the United States desperately tries to keep Ukraine’s military from being destroyed by Russia’s vastly superior armed forces.
The Pentagon is anticipated to commence the online listing of the contracts in the near future.
