On Sunday, former President Trump reportedly informed his supporters that he intends to appoint former NFL player and failed GOP Senate candidate Herschel Walker to oversee a new missile defense shield if he is elected.
Walker, who is a fervent supporter of Trump, participated in a rally in Macon, Georgia.
If elected, Trump, who spoke after Walker, stated that he would construct a missile defense shield entirely made in the United States and appoint Herschel Walker as its director.
Trump vowed he would “put Herschel Walker in charge of that little sucker.”
In the past year, Trump has declared that he would establish a “Iron Dome” for the United States during his second term, a reference to the missile defense system employed by Israel.
He stated on Sunday that a significant number of such systems would be constructed in Georgia.
However, Iron Dome is designed to intercept short-range missiles, and any system constructed to safeguard the U.S. mainland would be prohibitively expensive and ineffective in intercepting mid- to long-range missiles, such as those from North Korea or Russia.
It is uncertain whether Trump intended for Walker to be responsible for the supervision of all U.S. missile defenses or the development of a new system.
Walker played in the NFL for 12 seasons, commencing in the late 1980s, before retiring and embarking on a variety of business ventures.
He subsequently transitioned to politics and served as a co-chair of the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition under Trump from 2019 to 2020.
Walker’s inaugural political campaign was the 2022 Senate election in Georgia, during which he advocated for the completion of Trump’s southern border wall and for Washington to “heavily invest” in the military.
