The Secret Service has now reported that a Secret Service agent fired on carjackers outside the residence of Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen early Tuesday morning.

According to USSS Chief Communications Officer Anthony Guglielmi, an agent on protective assignment in northwest Washington, D.C., fired on a group of individuals driving a sedan near the residence.

He stated that there is no indication that an individual was injured at this time, and the Metro Police Department is conducting additional investigations.

It is still uncertain whether Yellen was present in her residence at the time. No suspects have been identified.

“At approximately 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, a U.S. Secret Service special agent working a protective assignment in the 2900 block of Stephenson Place NW observed a sedan with multiple occupants who were attempting to open car doors along the street. As the sedan approached the agent, a confrontation occurred between the agent and the car’s occupants. The agent discharged their service weapon, but there is currently no evidence to indicate anyone was struck.” Guglielmi said.

The incident occurs months after another potential carjacker was fatally shot in July when he pointed a pistol at a U.S. Marshal who was responsible for safeguarding the residence of Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor.

Kentrell Flowers, 18, departed a silver minivan and approached one of the unmarked Marshal’s vehicles on the 2100 block of 11th Street NW at approximately 1:15 a.m.

Two Deputy U.S. Marshals were on duty, working a protective detail. This information was reported by the D.C. Metropolitan Police in a criminal complaint.

According to law enforcement, Flowers appeared to be attempting to carjack the Deputy U.S. Marshal by pointing a handgun at him through the driver’s side window.

The Deputy Marshal discharged his service firearm at Flowers through the window approximately four times, according to a police criminal complaint.

Additionally, a Marshal from an additional vehicle responded and discharged his service weapon.

The U.S. Marshals Service verified at the time that the Deputy U.S. Marshals involved in the shooting incident were assigned to the unit that safeguards the residences of U.S. Supreme Court justices.

However, the agency stated that it was unable to provide specifics regarding protective security details.
