Former Wyoming Republican Liz Cheney is reportedly becoming more and more of a target of President-elect Trump, who has suggested that she should face prosecution for her involvement with the now-disbanded House Jan. 6 committee.
Cheney has long been known for her outspoken anti-Trump stance and well as for her continual advocacy for America to pursue more foreign wars.
Liz Cheney is the daughter of former Vice-President Dick Cheney one of the main architects of the disastrous Iraq war.
Trump accused Cheney of committing crimes while she lead the panel in response to a report by a House subcommittee that alleges Cheney improperly communicated with star witness Cassidy Hutchinson.
“Liz Cheney has been exposed in the Interim Report, by Congress, of the J6 Unselect Committee as having done egregious and unthinkable acts of crime.” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.
“She is so unpopular and disgusting, a real loser!” he added.
Hutchinson initiated contact with Cheney, and any actions taken by the former member of the House GOP leadership could be protected by the Speech or Debate Clause of the Constitution.
However, the report serves as a potential guide for an investigation into a prominent Trump critic, whom the president-elect has repeatedly stated should be subjected to repercussions.
Rep. Barry Loudermilk (R-Ga.), the chair of the House Administration subcommittee, submitted the interim report. Loudermilk was subjected to a review by the Jan. 6 committee after providing a Capitol tour to two constituents on Jan. 5, 2021, who subsequently joined the rioters who had congregated around the building.
His report, which is described as a review of the “failures and politicization” of the panel, advocates for a criminal investigation into Cheney, alleging that she may have violated statutes regarding witness tampering by engaging in communication with Hutchinson.
Hutchinson initially contacted former White House aide Alyssa Farah Griffin, who the report alleges served as a backchannel between Hutchinson and the lawmaker.
The lawmaker’s memoir recounts that Hutchinson was the one who initially contacted Cheney, and she advised her to seek out a new attorney.
