Ultra-liberal Oregon has now reportedly become America’s first ‘death tourism’ destination.

Terminally sick patients are now reportedly traveling from other states like Texas and other areas where assisted suicide is illegal to get a lethal mix of medications to end their lives.

At least one clinic in Portland’s liberal bastion has begun accepting out-of-state patients who have fewer than six months to live and fulfill the other stringent standards of the state’s Death with Dignity (DWD) statute.

Despite a legal murky area, Dr. Nicholas Gideonse, the head of End of Life Choices Oregon, recently informed a panel that he was counseling terminally sick non-residents on traveling to Oregon to end their lives.

According to the clinic’s website, out-of-state residents must be able to spend at least 15 days in Oregon to handle the paperwork, which involves sign-offs from two physicians and witnesses, before giving the lethal dosage themselves.

Dr. Gideonse and the clinic operate in a legal limbo – the state agreed last year to provide access to doctor-assisted suicide to out-of-state residents, but this is not anticipated to become law until later this year.

In 1997, Oregon became the first state in the United States to legalize physician-assisted suicide, enabling terminally ill adult Oregonians with fewer than six months to live to ask doctors for a deadly dose of medicines, which they then administer themselves, often at home.

In 2021, the most recent year for which statistics are available, doctors prescribed 383 deadly medication dosages and 238 people died, the majority of them were white persons aged 65 and above suffering from cancer or brain or heart illnesses.
