After a series of brief hospital trips, former President Jimmy Carter has now reportedly elected to seek home hospice care, the Carter Center said on Saturday.
“After a series of short hospital stays, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter today decided to spend his remaining time at home with his family and receive hospice care instead of additional medical intervention. He has the full support of his family and his medical team.” A statement released by the Carter Center read.
Hospice care is offered for persons with terminal illnesses who have six months or fewer to live. It focuses on quality of life and pain reduction while catering to the patient’s requirements.
Carter has had a number of health issues in recent years, including a brain bleed in November 2019 that necessitated surgery.
Former President George H. W. Bush, the last president to die, passed away in 2018.
Carter was the 39th President of the United States. He was born on October 1, 1924, in Plains, Georgia, and grew up on his family’s peanut farm. Carter served as President from 1977 to 1981, and was known for his commitment to human rights, foreign policy, and social justice.
Carter’s presidency was marked by economic challenges, including high inflation and unemployment. He also faced criticism for his handling of the Iran hostage crisis, in which 52 American hostages were held captive in Iran for over a year.
After leaving office he founded the Carter Center, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting human rights and democracy around the world. He has also been active in Habitat for Humanity, a nonprofit organization that helps provide affordable housing for low-income families.
In recognition of his lifetime of service, Carter was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.
