On Wednesday, President-elect Donald Trump reportedly announced that he has chosen Tulsi Gabbard, a former Democratic congresswoman who has since become a supporter of Trump, to serve as the director of national intelligence.
Gabbard’s appointment is certain to ignite a significant confirmation battle.
In 2020, Gabbard, an Army National Guard veteran, unsuccessfully ran for president as a Democrat. However, she announced her intention to depart the Democratic Party in 2022.
She was a member of Trump’s transition staff and participated in his campaign.
During the 2020 Democratic primary debates, Gabbard and Harris engaged in numerous noteworthy exchanges. Harris criticized Gabbard for her foreign policy stances, while Gabbard questioned Harris’ criminal justice record.
In the 2020 presidential campaign, Gabbard promoted herself as an Iraq War veteran with an anti-interventionist foreign policy.
