In a pointed address delivered via video at the World Health Assembly in Switzerland, Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr. reportedly criticized the World Health Organization (WHO) as a “moribund” institution overly influenced by China.
His remarks come in the wake of the United States’ controversial withdrawal from the WHO, initiated by President Donald Trump earlier this year.
Kennedy’s comments reflect growing frustrations with the WHO’s handling of global health crises, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic.
He accused the organization of being mired in “bureaucratic bloat” and entrenched conflicts of interest, asserting that it has lost sight of its mission to serve the interests of the global public.
“While the United States has historically provided the lion’s share of the organization’s funding, other nations, notably China, have exerted undue influence over its operations,” Kennedy stated.
The Secretary pointed to the WHO’s initial response to COVID-19, claiming it suppressed critical information regarding human-to-human transmission.
He alleged that the organization promoted the narrative that the virus originated from bats rather than a laboratory in Wuhan.
“Not only has the WHO capitulated to political pressure from China, it has failed to uphold transparency and fair governance,” Kennedy asserted.
Kennedy also expressed concern that the organization has become biased towards corporate interests, suggesting that it has pushed “harmful gender ideology” at the expense of broader public health initiatives.
He urged health officials worldwide to rethink their systems, advocating for a more accountable and responsive approach to health governance.
In his speech, Kennedy outlined reforms he has implemented within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, including a focus on chronic health issues and the removal of harmful additives from food.
He emphasized the need for a new framework for global health cooperation, one that prioritizes the needs of citizens over transnational corporate interests.
“Global cooperation on health is still critically important to President Trump and myself,” Kennedy said. “However, the failures of the COVID era demonstrate that the WHO is not functioning effectively.”
He urged the world’s health ministers to view the United States’ withdrawal as a “wake-up call” to reform the organization.
