Republicans in the House Freedom Caucus on Thursday reportedly demanded the creation of a new select committee to investigate what they described as the “money, influence, and power behind the radical left’s assault on America and the rule of law” following the assassination of conservative leader Charlie Kirk.
In a letter to Speaker Mike Johnson of Louisiana, House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer of Kentucky, and House Judiciary Committee Chair Jim Jordan of Ohio, 23 members of the caucus — led by Representative Chip Roy of Texas — argued that Washington must act decisively to expose and dismantle what they see as a coordinated campaign undermining the nation.
“In the wake of numerous attacks on our way of life, the destruction of the rule of law, and the murder of innocent Americans, prominent and unknown alike, we must take every step to follow the money and uncover the force behind the NGOs, donors, media, public officials, and all entities driving this coordinated attack,” the lawmakers wrote. They warned of “a sustained breakdown of law and order, fueled not by chance, but by anti-American ideology.”
The lawmakers pointed to what they called the dangerous influence of “radical organizations,” including those funding progressive campaigns for district attorneys and judges who, they claimed, “coordinate releasing criminals to the streets.”
Citing a recent case that captured national outrage, the letter referenced the murder of Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska, killed by a repeat offender who had been released 14 times. “The result has been death and injury to thousands of Americans,” the members said.
The group also criticized the Southern Poverty Law Center, which earlier this year had placed Turning Point USA — the organization Kirk co-founded — on its “hate map” of extremist groups.
“Enough is enough,” the letter declared. “We must follow the money to identify the perpetrators of the coordinated anti-American assaults being carried out against us and take all steps under the law necessary to stop them.”
Their call for investigations mirrors President Donald J. Trump’s pledge in the aftermath of Kirk’s assassination to “find each and every one of those who contributed to this atrocity and to other political violence, including the organizations that fund it and support it.”
Roy, along with Representative Andy Biggs of Arizona, who also signed the letter, hold subcommittee chairmanships under the Judiciary Committee. But both emphasized the need for a new subcommittee with “full subpoena powers and authority to deliver results.”
“We can no longer pretend to be bound together by shared ideals when a well-funded, vitriolic cadre of our fellow Americans and foreign interests are at war with the very values of faith in God, fidelity to our Constitution, and respect for the principles of liberty and Western Civilization that define us as Americans — including, notably, the free speech practiced and exemplified by Charlie Kirk,” the members wrote.
Among the signatories were Freedom Caucus Chair Andy Harris of Maryland and Representatives Scott Perry of Pennsylvania, Josh Brecheen of Oklahoma, Andy Ogles of Tennessee, Eric Burlison of Missouri, Keith Self of Texas, Brandon Gill of Texas, Lauren Boebert of Colorado, Byron Donalds of Florida, and Barry Moore of Alabama.
