Team USA golf captain Brandt Snedeker handed President Donald Trump a major share of the credit Sunday after the Americans stormed back to win the Presidents Cup.
The United States erased a three-point deficit to beat the International Team 17-13, locking up its 11th straight victory in the competition. Snedeker said the president deserved “all the credit” for the turnaround.
Trump showed up at Medinah Country Club in Illinois ahead of the final day’s singles matches, greeting the American players on the first tee. At that point, Team USA was in a tough spot, having been outplayed for much of the previous three days and needing a rally to save the contest.
The rally came.
Once the comeback was complete, Snedeker followed through on a promise he said he had made to the president.
“All these guys fought for each other, fought for this country, fought for this team,” Snedeker said.
He then turned his attention to the commander in chief.
“And one last shout to Donald Trump, President Trump… He told me I was going to bring some energy today for you guys, you guys need it, and I told him if we did this, he gets all the credit. Thank you, President Trump,” Snedeker said.
Trump later shared the clip on Truth Social.
The president’s appearance set the stage for a dominant showing by the Americans in singles play, one that wiped out the International Team’s lead.
Cameron Young and Justin Thomas got things started, putting early points on the board for the U.S. From there, Collin Morikawa and rookie Jackson Koivun helped swing the contest with late surges.
Patrick Cantlay added fuel to the fire on the 16th hole, draining a birdie putt from just inside 60 feet in his match against Adam Scott.
The clinching moment belonged to Jacob Bridgeman. His short par putt on the 18th sealed a 1-up victory over Min Woo Lee and delivered the decisive point for Team USA.
The win capped a remarkable reversal for an American squad that had spent most of the competition playing from behind. Heading into Sunday, the International Team held the advantage, and the U.S. needed a strong finish in the singles matches to keep its winning streak alive.
That is exactly what the Americans delivered, and the celebration that followed was one for the record books as the team extended its streak to 11 consecutive Presidents Cup victories.
Snedeker’s remarks made it clear he believed the president’s visit played a role in firing up his players before the final round. According to the captain, Trump told him he would bring some energy to the team, something Snedeker said the players needed.
Snedeker made a deal with the president on the spot: if Team USA pulled it off, Trump would get the credit.
