On Tuesday, a Detroit-area community reportedly approved allowing citizens to sacrifice animals at home for religious purposes.
The Hamtramck City Council, comprised entirely of Muslims, authorized the practice 3-2 on Tuesday.
The issue was put to a vote in December, but city council members decided to keep the prohibition in place.
Following legal advice and complaints from local Muslims, the subject was reconsidered this month.
Residents in Hamtramck must inform the city, pay a fee, and make their property available for examination.
Hamtramck has a population of 28,000 people. More over half of the population is of Yemeni or Bangladeshi origin.
Nearby Dearborn, Michigan has become notable as the U.S. city with the highest percentage of muslims per capita in the nation.
