Friday marked the official adoption of a new transgender policy by USA Boxing.
Under this policy, males who identify as female will be permitted to compete against females, provided they satisfy specific criteria.
According to National Review, the novel policy, which was initially suggested in August 2022, stipulates that male athletes who identify as female are additionally obligated to undergo “gender reassignment surgery” and undergo testosterone testing for a duration of four years subsequent to the procedures.
The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Health classifies the typical range of values for males as 10 to 35 nmol/L and for females as 0.5 to 2.4 nmol/L.
Therefore, a qualifying male competitor may possess testosterone levels that are more than double those of an average female competitor.
The regulations also specify that boxers below the age of 18 are required to compete against opponents of the same sex, irrespective of their self-identified gender.
Additionally, the organization asserts that the policy was necessary because the International Federation (IF) of USA Boxing has yet to determine eligibility for transgender boxers.
On the contrary, opponents of these transgender policies assert that allowing males to compete against females will result in the demise of women’s sports, promote inequity, eliminate designated areas for girls and women, and expose women to physical harm.
For instance, according to a study published in 2021, men who self-identify as transgender continued to possess physical advantages over women despite enduring prolonged hormone therapy.
