China has now reportedly expressed its readiness for “any type of war” with the United States following President Trump’s decision to double tariffs on Chinese imports.
The tariffs increased from 10% to 20%, while additional tariffs on Canada and Mexico also took effect.
In response, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman criticized Trump’s justification for the tariffs, particularly regarding fentanyl trafficking, calling it a weak excuse.
The spokesman emphasized that the U.S. is responsible for its own fentanyl crisis and stated that China has taken significant steps to assist in addressing the issue.
“The U.S., not anyone else, is responsible for the fentanyl crisis inside the U.S. In the spirit of humanity and goodwill towards the American people, we have taken robust steps to assist the U.S. in dealing with the issue. If the U.S. truly wants to solve the fentanyl issue, then the right thing to do is to consult with China on the basis of equality, mutual respect and mutual benefit to address each other’s concerns.” Lin said.
He urged the U.S. to engage in dialogue based on equality and mutual respect rather than aggression, warning that China is prepared to “fight till the end” if the U.S. pursues a confrontational approach.
“If the U.S. has other agenda in mind and if war is what the U.S. wants, be it a tariff war, a trade war or any other type of war, we’re ready to fight till the end. We urge the U.S. to stop being domineering and return to the right track of dialogue and cooperation at an early date.” he added.
In the U.S., Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth remarked that while the country desires peace, it must also be prepared for conflict, highlighting the need to rebuild military strength in response to global threats.
Additionally, China retaliated by imposing tariffs on American food imports and suspending sales to 15 U.S. companies.
Trump defended the tariffs as a means to pressure neighboring countries to combat illegal immigration and drug trafficking, asserting that other nations have historically imposed higher tariffs on U.S. goods.
He argued that it was time for the U.S. to take a stand and correct this imbalance in trade relations.
