Special Prosecutor Jack Smith Seeks Protective Order From Court After Trump Statements

Invoking social media threats, Justice Department Special Counsel Jack Smith reportedly urged the federal judge presiding over the case of alleged election fraud against former President Trump to seek a protection order for the evidence.

Trump shouldn’t be allowed to discuss specifics from evidence and discovery papers in public, according to Smith, who said that this is necessary in Trump’s situation.

“Such a restriction is particularly important in this case because the defendant has previously issued public statements on social media regarding witnesses, judges, attorneys, and others associated with legal matters pending against him,” Smith wrote in his filing.

“If the defendant were to begin issuing public posts using details — or, for example, grand jury transcripts — obtained in discovery here, it could have a harmful chilling effect on witnesses or adversely affect the fair administration of justice in this case,” he continued.

“IF YOU GO AFTER ME, I’M COMING AFTER YOU!” Trump posted on Truth Social.

The prosecution stated that attempts to negotiate a protective order arrangement with Trump’s legal team had failed and had stopped them from providing evidence to the defense as swiftly as they would have liked.

According to Smith, the defense team for Trump rejected both drafts of the prosecution’s protective order proposals.

The special counsel criticized Trump’s legal team’s version, which they also put forward.

The Trump team has refuted claims that a post on Truth Social put witnesses in his criminal cases in danger.
