On Tuesday, the Russian military announced that its forces had seized control of ‘New York’ (Niu-York), a strategically significant logistics center in eastern Ukraine, as part of Moscow’s relentless campaign to annex the entire Donetsk region.
Even as Ukrainian troops endeavor to somehow try to advance in Russia’s Kursk region following a surprise cross-border attack on Aug. 6, the fate of Niu-York serves as a reminder that Russian forces are continuing their own successful offensive in eastern Ukraine.
Novgorodskoye is the Russian transliteration of the settlement’s Soviet-era name, Niu-York, which Ukraine restored to its original name in 2021.
The Ukrainian military did not immediately respond to a request for comment regarding the settlement’s current status.
Niu-York, which is situated on the railway line to Sloviansk, is one of the communities in eastern Ukraine that Moscow has long desired to acquire. Its pre-war population was just under 10,000.
On Tuesday, the Ukrainian military announced that there was significant combat in the Toretsk sector, which included Niu-York.
This announcement was made in response to allegations from Russian military bloggers that Moscow’s forces were conducting mopping-up operations in Niu-York.
