According to a stunning new report, it appears that disgraced former film mogul Harvey Weinstein is expected to claim that he had a ‘consensual affair’ with Jennifer Siebel Newsom, the current ‘first partner’ of California and wife to Democrat Gavin Newsom.
The news comes on the heels of reports that Newsom is now claiming she was raped by the former Hollywood honcho.
However it appears that Weinstein has now succeeded in getting a judge to allow him to present an email from Siebel Newsom that shows her calmly asking Weinstein for advice as evidence in the upcoming trial.
Lawyers for the defense and the L.A. County District Attorney’s office clashed Monday in downtown Los Angeles ahead of Weinstein’s criminal trial over the inclusion of a 2007 correspondence between Newsom and Weinstein over revelations of an affair Gavin Newsom had with an aide while mayor of San Francisco.
The email was sent nearly two years after Weinstein allegedly raped the actress-filmmaker in an L.A. hotel room.
The email to Weinstein occurred soon after Siebel began seeing Newsom, with the soon-to-be first lady of San Francisco blaming the wife of Newsom’s campaign manager for the affair.
The pair married in 2008; Newsom served as California’s lieutenant governor from 2011 to 2019, and was sworn in as the state’s 40th governor in 2019.
“Of all things you’d think a woman that is raped by Harvey Weinstein wouldn’t do, it’s [ask him] how to deal with a sex scandal,” Weinstein’s attorney said in a statement to the court.
“The fact that she comes to Mr. Weinstein for that advice indicates the friendship and companionship of Jane Doe 4 and Mr. Weinstein. The defense will be that they had an affair, that they had consensual sex,” he continued.
Jury selection is scheduled to go until October 23 and opening arguments will then begin soon after.
Weinstein’s trial in Los Angeles is projected to last until the end of the year.
Weinstein was sentenced to 23 years in jail by a Manhattan jury in March 2020 for various sex offenses, with a potential sentence of 140 years in prison if proved guilty of the new charges in addition.
Weinstein is facing four counts of rape, four counts of forceful oral copulation, one act of sexual penetration by use of force, and one count of sexual battery by restraint and sexual battery in events involving five women in Los Angeles County between 2004 and 2013.
