Itamar Ben Gvir, Israel’s Minister of National Security, announced on Tuesday that 10,000 assault rifles will be purchased and disseminated to border communities’ civilian security teams.
Hamas has kidnapped Israeli women, murdered Israelis in their homes, ambushed and killed Israeli drivers on streets and highways, and perpetrated atrocities against Israeli children.
It was reported on October 8 that Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant instructed the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to disperse weapons and ammunition to communities near the Gaza border.
Ben Gvir has also made it plain that he desires an IDF representative to collaborate with “local leaders” in the vicinity of the Gaza border in order to maximize the use of armed citizens.
The decision to disseminate the rifles and equipment was made after civilian security teams reported that they could repel Hamas attacks similar to the one that occurred on Saturday evening.
Additionally, bulletproof vests and headgear will be dispersed.
Ben Gvir is the leader of a far-right party that is frequently characterized as extremist. He was elected in 2022 due in part to public indignation over Israeli Arab riots against Israeli Jews.
