White House Border Czar Tom Homan said Saturday that Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., faces the very real possibility of losing her U.S. citizenship as federal investigators dig into allegations of immigration fraud.
Appearing on Fox News’ “The Big Weekend Show,” Homan addressed the ongoing probe into the Minnesota Democrat, which made headlines earlier this week when federal agents raided Omar’s Washington, D.C., home.
According to Fox News, Omar is being investigated over claims that she and her father lied about her birth year on immigration documents in order to obtain citizenship after the family left Somalia in the 1990s.
Homan told viewers the federal government has a “strong case” against the progressive lawmaker, though he declined to reveal too many details on air. Still, the border czar made clear he believed Omar could ultimately be removed from the country.
“She’ll be held to the same standards you and I are held: if she violated the law, then she should be held accountable,” Homan said.
Co-host Tomi Lahren pressed Homan on what consequences Omar might face, asking, “Would this involve denaturalizing and then deporting her, if it does turns out there is some kind of immigration fraud?”
Homan didn’t hesitate.
“Of course,” he responded. “If you lie during the naturalization process, there is a process to denaturalize somebody. We’ve done it before, it’s a long, tedious process, but it’s been done before. I’ve been involved with those investigations before, and certainly, if the evidence points that way, that could happen.”
Homan’s remarks came three days after The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday that the investigation is aimed at building a case to strip Omar of her citizenship.
According to the Journal, the multipronged effort is focused, at least in part, on how Omar became a citizen after arriving in the U.S. from Somalia decades ago. Sources familiar with the probe told the outlet that investigators are looking at both the congresswoman and the actions of her late father, Nur Omar Mohamed, who brought his daughter and other relatives to the United States from a refugee camp in Kenya in 1995.
Omar has denied any wrongdoing.
Following the raid, the congresswoman took to X, claiming the action was clearly an attempt by President Donald Trump to “target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement.”
“For ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns. This is just the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation,” Omar wrote. “I will not be silenced.”
The Minnesota Democrat and the president have traded barbs many times over the years. Last year, Trump said he did not want more Somalis like Omar coming to the United States.
“They contribute nothing. I don’t want them in our country, I’ll be honest with you,” Trump said. “Some will say that is not ‘politically correct.’ I don’t care. Their country is no good for a reason.”
For now, the investigation into Omar continues, and if Homan’s comments are any indication, federal officials appear prepared to pursue the case wherever the evidence leads. Whether that ends with Omar losing her citizenship remains to be seen, but the border czar made one thing clear on Saturday: no one, not even a sitting member of Congress, is above the law.
