Brian Nguyen just became the first transgender person to win a title associated with the Miss America paegent system.
He was chosen “Miss Greater Derry 2023” this past Sunday, earning him a crown and a scholarship. The Miss Greater Derry Scholarship Program awards scholarships to “young ladies” aged 17 to 24.
Last week, the United States Court of Appeals ruled that Miss United States of America LLC cannot be forced to accept transgender applicants because doing so would impede the organization’s capacity to convey the it’s conceived image of American femininity.
The verdict states that their decision not to accept transgender applicants is protected by the First Amendment.
Anita Green, a transwoman, filed a case, which led to the result rather surprising result.
“I believe United States of America Miss is on the wrong side of history for choosing to actively discriminate against transgender people, but the road to creating meaningful change has always been a long and bumpy one,” Green said.
Needless to say, many conservatives on Twitter were not fans of the decision to give Ngyuen the award:
