Former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) predicted on Wednesday that the Senate will not confirm former Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.), President-elect Trump’s nominee for attorney general.
McCarthy responded to Bloomberg Television’s inquiry regarding Trump’s Cabinet nominees thus far by asserting, “I think the choices are very good, except one.”
“Look, Gaetz won’t get confirmed. Everybody knows that.” he added.
McCarthy, who was a staunch Trump supporter during his tenure in the House, was questioned as to why the former president would make the effort to select Gaetz if he was aware that the Florida Republican would not be confirmed.
“You’d have to ask the president, but Gaetz couldn’t win in a Republican conference, so it doesn’t matter.” McCarthy concluded.
McCarthy has maintained an ongoing conflict with Gaetz, who was instrumental in the campaign to remove the California Republican from his leadership position last autumn.
The former Speaker of the House resigned from the House in the latter part of last year and has maintained that Gaetz’s motives for removing him were solely motivated by an ethics complaint.
