Green laser beams seen above the Hawaiian Islands last month are reportedly now thought to have come from a Chinese satellite, according to astronomers.
In a January 30 tweet, the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ) stated that the space agency’s Subaru-Asahi Star Camera on Mauna Kea on the Big Island of Hawaii photographed green laser lights in the hazy sky over Maunakea, Hawai’i.
NASA scientists later claimed that the incident in question most likely came from a ACDL instrument used by the Chinese Daqi-1/AEMS satellite.
Roy Gal of the University of Hawaii’s Institute of Astronomy told KHON2 that the beams were from a Chinese satellite that detects pollution.
Ray L’Heureux, a former chief of staff of Marine Forces Pacific however raised alarm bells over the startling events.
“I’m not sure, and this is my opinion, why the Chinese — who are probably some of the most prolific polluters on the planet — would be collecting data on pollutants on this side of the Pacific,”
