Sen. Machaela Cavanaugh of Nebraska (D) reportedly had a meltdown during a session this past week after the state outlawed controversial transgender surgical mutiliations for children.
Cavanaugh continually screamed a chant, which reportedly enraged several senators to the point that they left the chamber.
“We nee trans people! We love trans people! Trans people belong here!. We need trans people! We love trans people! Trans people belong here! We need trans people! We love trans people! Trans people belong here! We need trans people! We love trans people! Trans people belong here! We need trans people! We love trans people! Trans people belong here!” Cavanaugh screamed.
The legislation, which prohibits transgender medical treatments and restricts the use of hormone therapy and puberty inhibitors for those under the age of 19, was approved by the legislature by a vote of 33 to 15 and was then forwarded to Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen (R) for signature.
Cavanaugh criticized the Republican senators for supporting the bill, which also protected unborn children by outlawing abortions beyond 12 weeks of pregnancy.
The measure does include exceptions for abortions in rape, incest, and situations when the mother’s life is in danger.
“Your children are posting things on social media, your children are calling you, colleagues. You have to live with your vote. … You have to live with the role that you play in history in the making today. You have to live with the fact that you vote to take away people’s rights. You have to live with that. The rest of us have to live with the implications of that, but you have to live with that.” she continued angrily.
