Tennessee’s Republican Governor, Bill Lee, reportedly enacted a law on Friday that permits teachers and school personnel in the state to possess concealed firearms on school premises.
The measure, designed to enhance school safety, is being introduced almost one year following a tragic incident where three children and three adults lost their lives in a mass shooting at The Covenant School in Nashville.
Prior to signing the Act, the governor publicly declared his endorsement of it during a press conference.
“I think we need to be really clear about what this does – districts have the right to choose. What’s important to me is that we give districts tools and the option to use the tool that will keep their children safe in their schools.” Lee said.
The legislation establishes a system of authorizations and instruction allowing educators and other school personnel to be eligible to carry a concealed firearm on school grounds.
The concealed carry applicant must obtain approval from the school superintendent, principal, and chief of local law enforcement.
In addition, the applicant is required to successfully conduct a background check, acquire an enhanced carry permit, endure a psychological examination, and complete 80 hours of training each year at their own cost in order to maintain authorization to carry a pistol on campus.
