According to officials, a group of Chinese migrants was deported by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) on a charter flight to China earlier this week.
The second departure of Chinese nationals from the United States this year occurred on Tuesday.
“Intending migrants should not believe the lies of smugglers – Chinese nationals without a legal basis to remain in the United States are subject to swift removal. The Department of Homeland Security will continue to strengthen consequences for individuals unlawfully entering our country and enforce our nation’s laws.” DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas remarked in a statement released Thursday.
The initial flight, which was the greatest since 2018, was conducted in June with the assistance of China’s National Immigration Administration.
The Pew Research Center estimates that in 2022, China was the third-largest source of immigrants to the United States, following Mexico and India, with an estimated 90,000 individuals entering the country.
In August 2022, China refused to receive returning citizens, thereby suspending cooperation with U.S. removal efforts.
Consequently, the nation experienced a significant increase in the number of immigrants who entered the country illegally from Mexico.
In the subsequent year, U.S. border officials apprehended over 37,000 Chinese nationals at the southern frontier, a tenfold increase from the previous year.
Nevertheless, China has resumed its collaboration with the United States in its deportation efforts this year.
In June, President Biden issued a proclamation that temporally suspended the entry of specific noncitizens across the southern border.
Border Patrol officials have reported that encounters have decreased by over 55% since that time.
