Taiwan’s leaders are reportedly now urgently revamping the island’s defenses in anticipation of a potential Chinese invasion by 2027. Their primary goal is to hold out long enough for U.S. assistance to arrive.

However, many analysts question whether Taiwan can achieve this ambitious transformation in just two years.

The self-governing island, which Beijing claims as its territory, is shifting its military focus from traditional warfare to developing asymmetric defenses.

This strategy aims to deter China’s significantly stronger military by making an invasion less appealing. If deterrence fails, Taiwan intends to inflict enough damage to slow down the Chinese forces while seeking help from the U.S.

The speed at which Taiwan enhances its military capabilities could influence Beijing’s decision-making regarding an invasion and its chances of success.

Improving military readiness involves policy, procurement, and personnel, and this process typically spans five to six years.

Taiwan is implementing various measures to detect and repel a potential Chinese invasion.

While many military experts believe China currently lacks the ability to overcome the geographical and military challenges of an invasion, recent Chinese military exercises simulating a blockade have raised alarms in Taiwan.

Additionally, Taiwan’s leaders aim to demonstrate to U.S. officials, including President Trump, that they are adequately preparing for self-defense, especially after calls for increased Taiwanese efforts.

The Taiwanese defense ministry has stated that while foreign military assistance is crucial, it is not the only avenue for strengthening defense capabilities, asserting, “It’s our country and we will defend it ourselves.”
