The mayor of College Park, Maryland, has been arrested on child pornography allegations.

Prince George’s County police arrested Mayor Patrick Wojahn, 47, on Thursday morning.

He is accused with 40 counts of possessing child exploitation material and 16 counts of disseminating child exploitation material.

Wojahn resigned Wednesday night, saying he will cooperate with law enforcement and does not want the inquiry to detract from the government’s goals.

College Park, with a population of little more than 35,000 people, is located about four miles northeast of Washington, D.C., and is home to the University of Maryland.

Denise Mitchell, Mayor Pro Tem of College Park, has been chosen to take over government duties until a Special Election is called to replace Wojahn.

According to the College Park City Charter, the election must be held within 65 days.

Wojahn, a Democrat, rose to political notoriety in 2004 when he was designated a plaintiff in a lawsuit seeking to repeal Maryland’s prohibition on same-sex marriage.
