Mohammed Reza Zahedi, a prominent commander in the Quds Force of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) for Lebanon and Syria, was killed in an Israeli air strike on Monday.

The incidient is highly provocative and is could lead to already hot tensions in the region boiling over.

Zahedi’s death marks a significant loss in the ongoing conflict, surpassing even the tragic demise of Sayyed Reza Mousavi last December.

In addition to his extensive duties concerning security on Israel’s borders, he held the highest position as a mediator between Tehran and Hezbollah.

It appears that Israel, without explicitly claiming responsibility, is being accused by Iran and Hezbollah of being involved. The removal of Zahedi could potentially impact the control of rocket attacks on Israel by the Lebanese terror groups.

Reports from Iranian press suggested that Zahedi was in a meeting with leaders of Palestinian Islamic Jihad during the strike, although the accuracy of these reports could not be confirmed by independent sources.Zahedi was in charge of the Quds Force’s Unit 18000, which had the responsibility of discreetly transporting ammunition and precision weapons into Lebanon, among other tasks.

In his previous roles, he had also led the IRGC’s Air Force and Imam Hussein Division.

According to early reports, the strike resulted in the loss of six lives. The target of the attack was a building located near the Iranian embassy.
