City Council Composed Of Muslims Bans LGBT Flags From Public Property

The municipal council of the sole American community with an all-Muslim executive branch and mayor reportedly overwhelmingly decided Tuesday night to outlaw the flying of LGBTQ Pride flags on any city-owned property.

The mayor pro tem and councilman Mohammed Hassan of Hamtramck, Michigan, a nearby city of around 28,000 people, sponsored the resolution.

The resolution reads “the government of the City of Hamtramck does not allow any religious, ethnic, racial, political, or sexual orientation group flags to be flown on the City’s public properties, and that only, the American flag, and the nations’ flags that represent the international character of our City shall be flown.”

“We serve everybody equally with no discrimination, but without favoritism. Those people who accused me of hating them, half of my boards and commissions are either LGBTQ, or supporters for LGBTQ. I never fired anybody who belong to the LGBTQ.” Hamtramck Mayor Amer Ghalib remarked.

After criticizing outgoing mayor Karen Majewski for displaying the Pride flag outside municipal hall, Ghalib was chosen in 2021.

In order to oppose the LGBT community over a city ordinance that would include the LGBT community as a protected category, conservative Christians in the area teamed together with the local Muslim community as early as 2008.

Russ Gordon, the chair of the Hamtramck Human Relations Commission, caused controversy by flying the Pride flag on Jos Campau Avenue with other flags last year.

He apparently intended to fly the flag once again, but given the recent resolution, it was unclear if he still planned to.
