In a post on the social media platform X, Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) referred to Hunter Biden’s conviction on federal firearms charges as “kind of dumb” minutes after the verdict was issued.
Hunter Biden, the second-oldest son of President Biden, was found guilty of three federal gun offenses on Tuesday afternoon.
In 2018, President Biden’s son was accused of lying about his sobriety in order to procure a gun and illegally possessing the weapon for 11 days, according to the felony charges.
Hunter Biden’s judgment was rendered two weeks following the conviction of former President Trump on all 34 felony counts in his New York hush money trial.
As Trump’s campaign dismissed the conviction as “a distraction” from more serious allegations, Gaetz made his statement.
On Thursday, President Biden informed ABC News that he would not grant his son a pardon if he were found guilty.
Hunter Biden may be sentenced to a maximum of 25 years in prison and $750,000 in penalties.
