The former president of the United States, Donald Trump, reportedly asked for the U.S. Supreme Court to intervene in the 2024 election on Friday, less than a day after being charged with attempting to sabotage the 2020 presidential election.
Trump, the front-runner in the Republican primary, said that handling a number of ongoing legal disputes constitutes “election interference” – the precise thing he is charged with plotting to do in his most recent indictment.
It’s unclear what Trump wants the Supreme Court to do about his 78 criminal charges, despite the fact that the high court has in the past been entrusted with rendering important decisions on presidential elections, probably most famously by ruling on a contentious recount in Florida in 2000.
“CRAZY! My political opponent has hit me with a barrage of weak lawsuits, including D.A., A.G., and others, which require massive amounts of my time & money to adjudicate. Resources that would have gone into Ads and Rallies, will now have to be spent fighting these Radical Left Thugs in numerous courts throughout the Country. I am leading in all Polls, including against Crooked Joe, but this is not a level playing field. It is Election Interference, & the Supreme Court must intercede. MAGA!” Trump wrote on his Truth Social Platform.
The Supreme Court often has appellate jurisdiction, which means that it takes into account cases that have been appealed from subordinate courts.
When CNBC asked the Supreme Court for comment, they did not react right away. Questions concerning the former president’s position were not immediately answered by a Trump campaign spokesperson.
In connection with his attempts to reverse his defeat to President Joe Biden in 2020, Trump was charged on Tuesday with four felony offenses.
The indictment, filed by special counsel Jack Smith, says that over several months, Trump and 12 other co-conspirators engaged in a changing, complex conspiracy that broke numerous laws, including the Conspiracy to Defraud the United States.
