When a legislator from Ontario made a counteroffer to purchase two U.S. states, the drama surrounding Donald Trump’s threats to seize control of Canada intensified.
Although most people consider Trump’s proposal to make Canada the 51st state in the union to be a huge troll, the president-elect appears to be growing increasingly serious about the concept.
Trump attributed the decision to himself after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau declared on Monday that he was leaving his position as the nation’s leader. He also mentioned that Canadians “love” the concept of being a state.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford reportedly responded to Trump’s threats by saying that at least two U.S. states should be absorbed by Canada.
“You know something, to the president I’ll make him a counteroffer; How about if we buy Alaska and throw in Minnesota and Minneapolis at the same time?” Ford told reporters during a recent press conference.
During a news conference at Mar-a-Lago on Tuesday, Trump told reporters that Canada does not treat the United States properly.
Then he reiterated his belief that Wayne Gretzky, a former professional ice hockey player from Canada, ought to be a prime ministerial candidate.
In reaction to the escalation of the immigration and fentanyl crises, Trump declared in late November that he intended to levy a 25 percent tariff on Canada and Mexico.
In an attempt to persuade the incoming U.S. president to reconsider the tariffs, Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau immediately flew down to Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home for a meeting.
Trump recommended that the northern neighbors establish a state in order to avoid the taxes after he told him that the tariffs would destroy the Canadian economy.
Trump feels that Canada should bear the economic consequences as its policies are costing the United States a significant amount of money.
