President Donald Trump reportedly reignited his long-running feud with liberal comedian and activist Rosie O’Donnell over the weekend, taking to Truth Social to question her commitment to the country and suggesting that her public behavior might warrant reconsideration of her U.S. citizenship.
“Because of the fact that Rosie O’Donnell is not in the best interests of our Great Country, I am giving serious consideration to taking away her Citizenship,” Trump wrote. “She is a Threat to Humanity, and should remain in the wonderful Country of Ireland, if they want her. GOD BLESS AMERICA!”
The comment came amid a broader wave of criticism by Trump against left-wing entertainers and media figures who have continued to attack him publicly in the lead-up to the 2024 election.
O’Donnell, a vocal opponent of Trump since before his first term, has made a career out of inflammatory rhetoric aimed at the president — often questioning his mental health, fitness for office, and even his patriotism.
Trump’s post did not specify what triggered his latest remarks, but the president has never hidden his disdain for O’Donnell, who was one of his most aggressive celebrity critics during his presidency.
The two have exchanged public insults for years, with Trump frequently calling her “untalented” and “mean-spirited,” and O’Donnell accusing him of being a “conman” and “dangerous.”
While critics on the left immediately pounced on Trump’s suggestion as authoritarian, supporters pointed to what they see as a double standard: celebrities like O’Donnell are often praised for viciously criticizing conservatives, but shielded from serious scrutiny when their own rhetoric crosses the line.
Trump’s comment about Ireland appeared to reference O’Donnell’s heritage. The comedian has not responded to the post.
While few expect Trump to pursue any real policy related to citizenship, the post underscores his continued willingness to take on high-profile cultural critics — a strategy that has long rallied his base and kept him at the center of political conversation.
